As we saw cyberattacks happening in the news to charities and small businesses, as well as with some of our clients, we were concerned – though we had some security measures in place, we knew there was probably a lot more we could be doing but we didn’t have the technical expertise to implement more advanced systems. We also wanted to have a full contingency plan and a specialized team we could go to for help if we were targeted and experienced any loss of data.

Support Growth

Aside from the looming threat of cyberattacks, we were also growing the team and moving to an all-remote structure due to the COVID-19 pandemic and needed day to day tech support to ensure a smooth transition.

How did these challenges impact your team?

Seeing cyberattacks happen to others and not knowing the best ways to mitigate them for ourselves was stressful! Though we tried to educate ourselves, hacking techniques are always changing and advancing, and we didn’t have the capacity to keep up with it all ourselves.

Why did you choose TUCU as your IT partner?

We had been in touch with TUCU on occasion for a couple of years, and would go to them for one-off questions and break and fix services as needed. They were responsive and helpful, and always steered us the right direction with their advice. Adam introduced us to the notion of managed IT support and the amazing benefits it would have in protecting our clients’ important data. That made it a natural step to move to managed IT support with TUCU.

Working with TUCU feels like a real partnership – they are responsive to questions, give reasonable advice, and have great turnaround time when we have issues. On occasion, staff are sometimes frustrated when they need to go through TUCU to install software, or we run into roadblocks in the security processes they suggest we should have more robust complex security processes in place, but we know that ultimately, everything they recommend is for better data security and we’re thankful for it!

Working with TUCU has given us a lot of peace of mind. We’re more vigilant than ever for social engineering tactics in phishing emails thanks to TUCU’s training modules, and it’s a relief to know we have a team to turn to with everything from basic questions about technology, to emergency support.

What is on your mind as you grow your business?

Working as bookkeepers and financial consultants, our clients trust us with access to their secure financial data. We need to make sure that our systems are secure, so we do not compromise our clients’ systems or open them up to further risk. Cybersecurity is something our company values more every day. We have recently been seeing instances of cyberattacks and fraud happen increasingly often, specifically in the charitable sector, and we know that bad actors are likely to continue getting more advanced in their strategies. By making sure that our cybersecurity is as strong as it can be, we can help mitigate the risk to ourselves and our clients.
