Common Causes For OneDrive Sync Issues
1) Check character limit on your filename. OneDrive has a character limit and “file path” length of 260 characters.
E.g. A filename with over 260 characters would cause a file sync error.
A file-path such as “c:/xxx/xxx/xxx…./xxx (to the length of over 260 characters) would cause a file sync error.
2) Check the file size of individual files you are attempting to sync. OneDrive allows for file sizes up to 2GBs before sync errors may occur. This limit is strictly enforced for files that are synced to SharePoint libraries.
3) Check the amount of items/files in your collection. OneDrive allows for 20,000 files in personal OneDrive for Business collections, but only 5,000 in SharePoint library collections. Anything over these amounts can cause sync errors to occur. If your libraries are larger than the allowable limits, divide them as you see fit and re-sync.
4) Check for duplicate filenames in the same folder. OneDrive does not allow the syncing of duplicate filenames in the same folder. This can cause a sync error.
How To Fix OneDrive Sync Issues
1) The first and most important step to quickly fixing an OneDrive Sync issue is determining what the issue is. Luckily, OneDrive provides a simple way of viewing sync issues. Follow these steps.
a. Locate the Microsoft OneDrive for Business icon located on your task bar. (This will normally be found at the bottom right of your screen. It should look like two blue clouds with one overlaying the other. If there is a sync issue it will have a yellow warning sign with an exclamation mark like this.
b. Right click on the error icon and then click “View Sync Issues”.
c. A new dialogue box will appear that will list each sync issue and the cause. You can use this list to determine how to fix the sync issue or provide the information to your IT Technician so that they can better diagnose a solution to the sync issues.
2) After you’ve determined the sync issues, you can attempt to manually fix the issues, such as in the case of a filename or path error. You can also attempt an automatic repair. An automatic repair will essentially stop your OneDrive for Business and attempt to internally fix the problem, after which, it will re-download all of your files while syncing your local computer to the server. This process may take some time, depending on the volume of your files. In most cases this will fix the sync issues. To perform an automatic repair:
a. Locate the Microsoft OneDrive for Business icon located on your task bar. This will normally be found at the bottom right of your screen. It should look like two blue clouds with one overlaying the other. If there is a sync issue it will have a yellow warning sign with an exclamation mark like this.
b. Right click on the error icon and then click “Repair”.
c. This will open up a new dialogue box that will run through the steps of repairing your OneDrive for Business sync issues. This process may take some time as it will need to re-download some or all of your synced files. You will be presented with a list of events that have either been repaired or failed. This will help you in determining whether or not the automatic repair is successful.
3) If the above steps have not resolved your issue, now is the time to contact your IT Technician. Be sure to provide us with all the steps you’ve taken to rectify the issue along with any errors you encountered during the process, or errors displayed in the “View Sync Issues” section.
