My Computer Is Slow And Then Runs Really Fast. What’s Wrong With It?

Computer Support Q&A

In this post, we take a look inside our inbox here at TUCU tech support.  From time to time we feature true and embellished stories and Q&A’s from clients and computer users.

My Computer Is Slow, Then Fast

Dear TUCU,

Something seems wrong with my computer, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

My PC seems to be running much more slowly than it used to. For example, it took me 10 minutes just to load up Outlook so that I could start typing this email. The internet feels like I am running on dial-up.

But it’s not all the time. Sometimes my computer is slow, sometimes it’s ok, and then sometimes it sounds like the computer fan is running too fast – like a million miles a minute, but I’m not running any programs. I’m literally just running Outlook and a browser.

This is intolerable. Is it mad at me? Did I do something wrong? Help!

Something Isn’t Right

Adam Says:

Dear “Something Isn’t Right”,

It sounds like you have a malware infection.

Back in the day, it used to be obvious when your computer had an infection because it would create obvious damage, or start popping ads up like crazy. Remember those?

Nowadays however, malware infections are silent, designed to hide from view while they use your computer as part of a network of infected bots to attack other systems and send spam.

Not to be alarmist, but it is possible that your internet service provider could shut you down due to your computer spamming people.

Also, the malware infection could also be siphoning your sensitive data from your computer, by logging every keystroke you enter and taking screen shots.

Your PC needs to be scanned for known viruses and malware and then cleaned.

We also recommend a good security firewall and protection software to prevent future infections.

By the way, if you are on a small business team, all of this is included under a Managed IT Services Plan. As part of our monthly managed IT services plan, we actually include ongoing screening each week. Just wanted to let you know that it’s an option, and our plan designed for small businesses with about 3-20 computers.

For now, you need to book a computer clean up.  We can help you with that either remotely or with an onsite computer service visit.

To have us clean up your computer, or to learn more about Managed IT Services for your team, please get in touch.
