Microsoft Announces Canadian Data Centres

Good News For Canadian Cloud Services Shoppers

Microsoft announced Canadian data centres to be built by 2016, to serve the ever increasing demand for nationally hosted cloud services.  This is great news for our clients who have inquired about the excellent cloud collaboration tools Office 365 offers, but who are limited by data housing rules pertaining to their industry. As of 2016, nationally hosted cloud services will solve that problem.

In April, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts, “Right now more than five million organizations are using Azure.” And while Azure is often used by larger enterprises, cloud services demand continues to grow in the small business sector.

Janet Kennedy, president of Microsoft Canada Corp., estimates that approximately 20% of small business have adopted at least one cloud service. Here at TUCU, we receive regular requests for Office 365 setup cost estimates and we’re consistently moving people off their aging Windows Small Business Servers and Exchange Servers to Office 365.

The Globe & Mail reported Ms. Kennedy discussing how cloud will reduce the cost of IT infrastructure. We can attest to that at the small business level, as we have seen a steady decline in small business customers investing in physical small business servers, opting for cloud services instead. The benefits include no large up front costs for equipment, no depreciation of physical equipment, always up to date software, and fixed monthly fees.

Office 365 in the cloud is PIPEDA, HIPAA, and ISO 27001 compliant, as well as compliant with another seven recognized data safety standards. Microsoft invested heavily in these areas as they have always been and wish to continue to be the go-to software provider for the PC based business world. In the past, we relied on Outlook, Word, Excel and Publisher in the business world. Today, 3.5 millions of business users rely on Office 365 and all those same programs in the cloud. This weekend, we are moving yet another team off an aging exchange server and Outlook software to Office 365.
