Google Upgrades Gmail Services to Https Protocal
Everyday, millions of emails crisscross the globe. More than a hundred million of these emails are sent by Google mail servers. Gmail is the world’s third largest webmail service, after Hotmail and Yahoo.
Google recently announced changes to its Gmail service, making user accounts more secure by adding the “https” protocol. This is a welcome upgrade for many Gmail users, including us here at Tucu, as we use Google mail ourselves.
Putting the “s” in “http”
When you look in your address bar, you see a display of the websites address or URL you are currently visiting. At the beginning of each website address, you see either “http” or “https.”
Many sites have used the “https” format for years now. Examples are banking and financial sites, or onlince commerce sites, which use the additional encryption “https” provides for keeping account information safe and secure.
Google has recently upgraded its services by adding the “https” protocol to its email accounts. Previously, Google did use the “https” protocol, but only when users where accessing their Gmail accounts from the log-in page. With the introduction of the “https” protocol on the mail page, all mails and messages get an added layer of protection. This added security makes it even harder for non-owners and hackers to access private information located in these pages.
Set Up
It’s easy because it’s already done.
Https mode is automatically setup with every Gmail account. Gmail users have the option of enabling or disabling this feature. Here’s how:
- Log-in to your Gmail account
- Locate and select the Settings option
- Choose “Browser Option” select “Don’t use https” or “Always use https”
- Click “Save Changes”
Why https?
Advancements in technology have made for faster and more reliable email transfers worldwide. This same technology has also made possible attacks more of a threat. With the introduction of the “https” protocol, Gmail users now have the added security for keeping messages and information away from prying eyes.
If you’re not using Gmail, now is a great time to try it. Gmail has grown in popularity because of its friendly user interface. Google also offers other free useful applications such as a calendar, to do list, and applications for creating documents and spreadsheets, and many new or small business owners get plenty of value out of those features.
